Employee - Director
When I worked at the Baton Rouge Chapter of the ARC I was the Director of Accounting reporting only to the CEO, Vic Howell, Sr. He was and still is a male chauvinistic pig. He actually "hit" on the Public Affairs employee. He only hired men during his tenure and when an opportunity opened up in the Emergency Services department he promoted a male with less experience than a female who had worked overtime without pay with the hopes of a promotion to the Director of Emergency Services when it came available. When it came time to settle on our annual budget, two years in a row he approved a raise for all of the Directors at a 5% rate. The rest of the staff received a 2% raise.

While I was there for only 2 short years, they re-structured 4 times to downsize. I think not only did they shrink 400 offices nationwide into just 45 regional offices, but they changed what each office "specialized" in. After re-structuring, all departments no longer existed at all locations, which made it harder for those of us who remained to adjust because 50% of our co-workers were gone. Also, the Accounting Director created a hostile work environment for us because that individual used little tact in dealing with employees and quite often yelled at us!

I enjoyed working under the Raleigh exec director. But overall, the company (back then) was not the greatest as far as corporate culture. Managers were allowed to do what they wanted to do, not always best practices.
Employee - Manager / Senior Manager
5 years ago, they were in great need of solid management. Perhaps things have since changed for the better.
Employee - Director
While the mission of the organization is very important, there was a significant lack of communications and cooperation between the national headquarters and the local divisions. Very little support from the national level. Leadership at the local division was inept. Unable to see the 'big picture' of how the efforts of the organization could have a positive impact on the community.
Employee - Director
Departments were silos with little collaboration with others. Too many people, especially senior leadership, had their own agendas which did not align with the mission of the organization. No accountability.
Employee - Director
It's important you are able to help the public when their needs were great.
Employee - Manager / Senior Manager
Culture of organization is very toxic and leadership was not competent.
Employee - Manager / Senior Manager
Too much negativity . The job was great, but the culture was toxic. Things were difficult, when it wasn't necessary.
Employee - Manager / Senior Manager
The world view of arc didn't match how it actually was.

I worked for the American Red Cross Blood Services over 20 years ago and believe that the culture has probably changed significantly in the past 20 years. My responses would not be on point with today's organization and culture.
Employee - Analyst / Associate / Consultant
Do not offer suggestions to improve the process. If it is not some 'higher up's' idea it will be squashed.
Employee - Analyst / Associate / Consultant
This organization sets you up to fail, not succeed.
Employee - Analyst / Associate / Consultant
Those poised for advancement must be part of the 'click' to receive a promotion. I had seen several passed over that were more qualified and the position was awarded to a friend. Often times the person hired for the position had little background/qualifications for the duties of the position.
Employee - Manager / Senior Manager
It's become a very toxic and hostile environment. Leadership couldn't be bothered with knowing the staff had very low moral and were being overworked.
Employee - Manager / Senior Manager
The company stopped investing in their employees and the current CEO is one of the worst leader the organization has ever had.
Employee - CXO (CMO, COO, CFO, etc.)
During my first three years with the American Red Cross, everything was great. Unfortunately by 2010, Senior Management in Washington began to strip all control away from local regions and chapters. They did this under the guise of "One Red Cross." However, what One Red Cross actually meant was no diversity of thought and idea, no deviation from a lockstep vision for the future, and a war against veteran Red Crossers who dared to stand distinct from the singular and parochial vision of the National Headquarters.
Employee - CXO (CMO, COO, CFO, etc.)
The American Red Cross has become far too hierarchal and directed from Washington. There is no longer any local autonomy.
