Employee - Analyst / Associate / Consultant
In this area, it is a better employer, although Eli Lilly or Roche would be preferable.

It's vary lassaiz faire and extremely hierarchical. If you are not part of the faculty or an administrator, you're a peasant. Within the faculty, it is also hierarchical. Clinicians rule the roost, regardless of what they bring into the university.
Employee - Analyst / Associate / Consultant
It is a university. Policies are unevenly and inconsistently enforced. It cares more about appearance than substance.

It provides a booming research environment.

Great environment. Great people and a wonderful town.
Employee - Professor
I simply enjoyed it, the other instructors were very helpful with any questions or concerns I had, the students were serious (for the most part) and the pay and benefits were decent. I also liked my department chair.

Employee - Manager / Senior Manager
Intellectually satisfying, responsive to community needs, amazing people, not great compensation.
Employee - Assistant / Coordinator
Great university to work for. Collegial and collaborative, at least where I worked.
Employee - Analyst / Associate / Consultant
Some jobs and some departments are great. I had an abusive alcoholic boss who did unscrupulous things, and higher ups ignored my complaints and transfer requests, but lots of good people there.

So many departments it can't be generalized. When academics move to management it is said they have "gone to the dark side." There is a rift between academics and the number crunchers and managers. IU has been forced to squeeze more money from students while decreasing services due to GOP state education cuts. Shameful gouging and privatization has resulted in housing and food and books, and fewer and fewer professors teach. Grad students, making less than minimum wage, do most teaching. I was kept hourly in IT for 5 years and never got any benefits. Departments are fiercely territorial, but it is a beautiful campus with many brilliant people, and a uniquely progressive and artsy culture on campus and in the town, that the greed and stupidity of state government can't destroy.

The managers over you will dictate the circumstances and satisfaction you will experience. Learn about them if you can. Each department/school has its own culture.
