I work at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in clinical pathology performing genetic testing assays. I began my career at MSKCC in the Infectious Disease Service in research. I later transitioned into pathology, because it gives me the opportunity to flow seamlessly between research and clinical workflows. Whenever something new and important comes out, it's really important to look at it, turn it upside down and figure out if that thing is going to be beneficial. I wanted to leverage the curriculum of Columbia's EMBA program to help me move forward research applications that can be transitioned into clinical applications in pathology. I also wanted to continue working full time so I could use knowledge I would gain at the EMBA program on a daily basis, while staying connected to my field.
There's something about the way the School brings students together that is very special. I haven't actually seen it anywhere else. The program is designed to allow students time to get to know each other outside of class in a meaningful way. School-sponsored events after class, like happy hour, gave me the opportunity to build familiarity and strong ties with my classmates.
Besides continuing to work in pathology research, I've been thinking about entrepreneurship. I've been impressed by the new platforms that people have been creating in the healthcare sphere. I collaborated with an EMBA student who also works at MSKCC in my Marketing Workshop class. We helped a company move forward on the marketing goals for their product. I believe their product will be a very important diagnostic tool in the future, and the experience working with this company made me more interested in entrepreneurship as a career choice.

One of the reasons I wanted to go to business school was to round out my quantitative capabilities, but more importantly, I wanted to grow my business by opening up doors that I didn't really even see yet. Being able to take a number of classes that were entrepreneurially driven--where I could spend a significant amount of time on my own business and get feedback from classmates, professors, and visiting business professionals--allowed me to see different openings, windows, and doors that I could explore, push, and expand.
The entrepreneurship course that I took in South Africa was pretty incredible, but my absolute favorite was Organizational Culture Demystified, which really looked at how culture affects business growth and success. It was something that was immediately applicable. I felt like I could immediately bring what I was learning to my company, which had started as a management and leadership consulting company. It's something that my partners and I were able to apply from day one for a number of our clients.
My business, which started as a strict leadership consulting firm, has grown into a functioning operations group as well. We also recently launched our own energy services company. I come from a background where I was involved with a very small, very elite special operations group within the US military. Columbia is like a larger version of the same: an elite group that is very welcoming and provides many opportunities for outreach within the community, and the growing business network that is New York City and the nation. I really think the Columbia network is unmatched, both nationwide and worldwide.

Joseph E. Stiglitz is an American economist and a professor at Columbia Business School. He is also the co-chair of the High-Level Expert Group on the Measurement of Economic Performance and Social Progress at the OECD, and the Chief Economist of the Roosevelt Institute. A recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences (2001) and the John Bates Clark Medal (1979), he is a former senior vice president and chief economist of the World Bank and a former member and chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers. Stiglitz created a new branch of economics called the "Economics of Information." Recognized around the world as a leading economics educator, he has written textbooks that have been translated into several dozen languages. Reuben Mark Professor of Organizational Character
Professor Katherine W. Phillips joined the faculty at Columbia
Business School as the Paul Calello Professor of Leadership and Ethics in Fall
of 2011. She is currently the Reuben Mark Professor of Organizational Character
and the Director of the Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Center for Leadership
and Ethics. Before joining Columbia, she was Associate Professor of Management
and Organizations at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University
and Co-Director and Founder of Northwestern's Center on the Science of
Diversity. Professor Phillips received her PhD in Organizational Behavior from
Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. Her Bachelors degree is in
Psychology from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Prof. Phillips
research addresses the main questions of what is the value of diversity and
what are the barriers that prevent society, organizations and especially work
teams from capturing the knowledge, perspectives and unique backgrounds of
every member? As organizations and society become increasingly diverse,
developing a more sophisticated understanding of intergroup relations and the
myriad of processes that interfere with capturing the value that diversity can
bring to the table, is essential for the continued growth of organizations.
Professor Phillips' theoretical and empirical work has focused mainly on the
small group processes and performance that are affected by diversity, but more
recently her work has expanded to assessments of worth and status that
intertwine with group composition to affect interpersonal and group outcomes.
Professor Phillips is the recipient of numerous professional
awards, including top awards and recognition from the International Association
of Conflict Management, the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of
Management, the Rosabeth Moss Kanter Excellence in Work-Family Research Award,
and the Gender, Diversity and Organizations Division of the Academy of
Management. Her research has been featured in numerous media outlets including
the Chicago Tribune, Time Magazine.com, Fortune.com, Working Women, The Globe
and Mail, and The Mint. In 2011 Poets and Quants named Professor Phillips one
of the Top 40 Business School Professors Under the Age of 40.
Professor of Business
Professor Netzer's expertise centers on one of the major business challenges of the data-rich environment: developing quantitative methods that leverage data to gain a deeper understanding of customer behavior and guide firms' decisions. He focuses primarily on building statistical and econometric models to measure consumer preferences and understand how customer choices change over time, and across contexts. Most notably, he has developed a framework for managing firms' customer bases through dynamic segmentation. More recently, his research focuses on leveraging text-mining techniques for business applications.
Professor Netzer published numerous papers in the leading scholarly journals. His research was nominated for and won multiple awards including, ISMS Long-term Contribution Award, the John Little Best Paper Award, the Frank Bass Outstanding Dissertation Award, the Paul E. Green Best Paper Award, the William O’Dell Best Paper Award, the Gary L. Lilian ISMS/MSI Practice Prize Award, the Society for Consumer Psychology (SCP) Best Paper Award, and the George S. Eccles Research Fund Award. He serves on the editorial board of several leading journals including: Marketing Science, Management Science, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, Quantitative Marketing and Economic, and International Journal of Research in Marketing.
