I considered going back to school for my MBA for years, but was not interested in the traditional programs. The Rutgers Executive MBA was highly recommended by several Johnson & Johnson colleagues and its Friday/Saturday schedule suited my needs given that I was the global head of a large business group and frequently traveled to Europe and Asia.
As my educational and professional background was primarily focused in the sciences, I wanted to formalize and hone my business skills through a program that would delve deeper into concepts already familiar to me and allow me to learn more. My personal interest was in the various strategic areas that were taught, particularly corporate strategy. As the program emphasizes the relationship of academic teachings to the real world, the Rutgers EMBA program took my business understanding to a new level.
After completing the program, I moved into a more strategic role at Johnson & Johnson as vice president for regulatory labeling and submissions management, responsible for filings to health authorities worldwide as well as for the systems and processes supporting that work. I can say the Rutgers Executive MBA program enhanced my business skills and strategic thinking and added a host of friends to my life. The experience as a whole, both professionally and personally, was transformational.

Dr. Langdana's areas of specialization include monetary and fiscal theory and international trade and global macroeconomic policy. His research deals with macroeconomic experimentation and the role of stabilization policy in an expectations-driven economy. He has published several articles as well as five books in this area. His new book, co-authored with Peter Murphy and published by Springer Press, is titled "International Trade and Global Macro policy."
Dr. Langdana is the recipient of the Horace dePodwin Research Award and more than 30 teaching awards, including the highest possible teaching award at Rutgers University – the Warren I. Susman Award. He also has received Rutgers Business School's Paul Nadler Award for Excellence in Teaching. From 2011 to 2013, the Award for Excellence in teaching in the MBA Program was named the Farrokh Langdana Teaching Excellence Award.
A professor in the Finance and Economics Department at Rutgers Business School, Dr. Langdana is also director of the globally ranked and highly regarded Rutgers Executive MBA Program. Dr. Langdana was recently interviewed by The Wall Street Journal where he discusses how the Rutgers EMBA program evolves constantly to meet the changing needs and demands of the global executive workplace. He has been director since 1997.

"Teaching in the EMBA Program is considered a plum," says Rosa Oppenheim, professor and executive vice dean at Rutgers business school. "It's always an exhilarating experience to walk into the classroom. The students are enthusiastic and challenging."
She continues, "We attempt to get the best possible faculty. Most of our professors are at the forefront of their fields. We also get very respected professionals from the corporate world."
The result, she says, is an up-to-date education that gives managers "a greater perspective on what is going on in their organization, what techniques are available for problem solving, what other companies are doing. It is an eye-opener."
Prof. Oppenheim teaches two course in the EMBA program—Business Statistics and Analytical Techniques. In keeping with the overall philosophy of the Rutgers EMBA program, her emphasis is on how the students can/should apply the classroom theory to their respective professions.

When Steve Chappell, one of the former presidents of Telcordia who was taking a few selected courses in Rutgers EMBA was told that Barry Karafin would be teaching Strategy in the program, he stopped what he was doing and said, “you mean THE Barry Karafin?”
This would indeed be the perfect description for Dr. Barry Karafin. He has been Vice President at Lucent/AT&T (now Avaya), interim CEO at Eastman Kodak , and is a highly sought-after consultant. His previous clients include 3Com, Adobe Systems, AT&T, Honeywell, Lucent Technologies, Thomson-CSF, and a variety of technology start-ups. His engagements include strategic and market planning, operations, technology strategy and management, and venture investment due-diligence. Two of Prof. Karafin’s start-up clients have been purchased by Fortune-500 firms.
Dr. Karafin teaches a truly capstone course in Rutgers EMBA He synthesizes elements from finance, economics, marketing, leadership, organizational behavior, global business, and supply chain management to deliver a course that is the envy of other Emba programs and a course that has EMBA alumni revisiting his classes. Given Prof. Karafin’s remarkable experience and exceptional teaching ability, it is not surprising that Strategy in Rutgers EMBA has been ranked #5 globally by Businessweek.
