“During the application process, I thought, if I wanted to continue a career in business/corporate development, I needed to have good training and understanding of finance. Also, if I want to one day lead a division (or company), I needed to have a good foundation in strategic and general management. The Wharton brand is well recognized for these and many more facets, and it also offered a convenient West Coast campus with the same curriculum and professors as the two-year full-time MBA program in Philadelphia. This sounded like a positive NPV investment to me!
The biggest lesson from Wharton is that I can truly do anything if I put my mind to it. Practicing agility, flexibility, persistence, and grit while finding the time to embrace and appreciate my support system were crucial to my success. In the first few months of the program, I wasn’t sure how to juggle a demanding job and find the extra hours for class every other Friday/Saturday alongside an additional 10-20 hours a week for homework and studying. I learned very quickly that the fastest path to success was to enable the success of my study team and together we could conquer any and everything. Leaning on my study team members and reciprocating, enabled both individual and collective learning, built trust, and resulted in us achieving all of our goals. We always took time to show appreciation and knew when to take a break. I’ve applied the same at work and truly enjoy uplifting my work colleagues and enabling their success so that together we can serve patients each day.”

Max and Bernice Garchik Family Presidential Associate Professor
Professor Exequiel (Zeke) Hernandez is the Max and Bernice Garchik Family Presidential Assistant Professor. He studies how firms strategically use formal and informal external relationships to internationalize, innovate, and enhance their performance. His research is motivated by a pervasive managerial challenge: firms do not own all the resources they need to be successful and thus have to reach beyond their organizational and national boundaries to get them. This leads firms to establish external relationships with collaborators and rivals, domestically and internationally. Zeke’s research explores how firms strategically access and manage these external relationships (i.e. their antecedents) and how such relationships affect globalization, innovation, and performance (i.e. their consequences).
Zeke is an award-winning teacher, recently recognized by Poets & Quants as a Best 40 Under 40 professor. He teaches the global strategy course in all of Wharton’s MBA programs (full-time, EMBA, and JDMBA) and trains executives from leading companies around the world. He has been recognized for teaching excellence by three different universities, most recently receiving the “Goes Above and Beyond the Call of Duty” (2018) and the Teaching Commitment and Curricular Innovation awards (2017) in the Wharton full-time MBA program.
David M. Knott Professor, Professor of Management, Co-Director of the Mack Institute for Innovation Management
Nicolaj Siggelkow is the David M. Knott Professor at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He is a Co-Director of the Mack Institute for Innovation Management at Wharton. He studied Economics at Stanford University and earned an M.A. in Economics from Harvard University. He received a Ph.D. in Business Economics from Harvard University and the Harvard Business School. Professor Siggelkow has been the recipient of multiple MBA and Undergraduate Excellence in Teaching Awards, including the Class of 1984 Award presented to the faculty member with the highest teaching rating in the MBA classroom, the Helen Kardon Moss Anvil Teaching Award, the Wharton Award, and the Wharton Graduate Association Student Choice Award. His research has been published in the leading management journals, including Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of Industrial Economics, Management Science, Organization Science, and Strategic Organization. In 2008, he received the Administrative Science Quarterly Scholarly Contribution Award for the most significant paper published in ASQ five years earlier. Nicolaj is a member of the Editorial Review Boards of Administrative Science Quarterly, Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, Strategic Organization, and Academy of Management Perspectives.
His current research focuses on the strategic and organizational implications of interactions among a firm’s choices of activities and resources. In particular, his research has focused on three broad questions: How do firms develop, grow and adjust their set of activities over time? How does organizational design affect a firm’s ability to find high-performing sets of activities? What role do interactions among a firm’s activities play in creating and sustaining competitive advantage? To address these questions, he has employed a range of methodological approaches, including in-depth field studies of individual firms, econometric methods for large-scale data sets, formal modeling, and simulation models.

They are processing concepts and frameworks that we talk about in an immediate way. That is fun and gratifying as a professor. It also holds us to a different standard because the students will let us know if it worked or not the following class weekend.”
