Employee - Director

A great mission.

Employee - Director

It was strong from 2001 to 2005. New leadership took over in the HR and Operations areas. No credibility or good business sense. Operated with intimidation towards others. Games played.

Employee - Director

Advice for new comers is to be immersed in the mission; give your subject matter expertise and hope you have a good manager that values those qualities.

Employee - Vice President (VP, SVP, EVP, etc.)

The mission, the volunteers and the survivors are amazing. Many of the staff are great. However the culture becomes less focused on the mission and staff and much more focused on money and management. Many times I found myself having to protect my staff. The culture is not one of valuing fundraisers and support staff. Staff should be much more valued.

Employee - Vice President (VP, SVP, EVP, etc.)

The mission and focus on the mission is great. The culture of employee micromanagement, and top down decision making is frustrating. My staff, being in the field with survivors and volunteers, and driven by the mission were educated, smart, dedicated and made quick and great decisions. The culture from top down is slow, makes more mistakes, and then is quick to blame staff for the mistakes made by the supervisors.

Employee - Vice President (VP, SVP, EVP, etc.)

The community support and the research part of the mission are incredible. The largest event, Relay For Life is almost separate from the organization that it funds. IF you are there for the mission, for the volunteers that support the mission, you can push a great deal of the grief to the side.

Employee - Assistant / Coordinator

Excellent place to work.

Employee - Analyst / Associate / Consultant

American Cancer Society provides a great service to the Community, so working for a Company that does such good is an awesome feeling

Employee - Analyst / Associate / Consultant

This is a "Do good, feel good company"

Employee - Analyst / Associate / Consultant

ITS A GREAT NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION, known for spending most of its funds on research etc vs Admin $$, which is the reason I left, I needed to make more $$

Employee - Director

I served with pride and commitment to this well know, national non-profit organization. As Communications Director I served with distinction and I was warmly welcomed into its leadership circle. As I recall, I served for about 3 years before I moved on to other work in the Washington, DC area. Trusting the values of its leadership today are as good as they were when I was with them, I'd highly encourage good candidates to seek work with this organization.

Employee - Director

We knew that the work we were doing had value, especially the fundraising component and proactive messaging/ marketing. I worked there at a time when the myths about HIV/AIDS were rampant. The ACS DC office, where I worked, had leadership that, across the board, was professional, proactive and cared deeply about all those affected by this debilitating illness. Anyone fortunate to work there, I think, will benefit in ways big & small for life.

Employee - Director

Sadly, the work of the American Cancer Society will ALWAYS BE IMPORTANT as long as there's no cure for cancer. Cancer is an 'equal opportunity' life-threatening illness. In my mind, I hope there is always ample public and private funds devoted to this disease. ACS is a wonderful, respected nationally recognized organization that, to date, has never had scandal or controversy associated with its brand. As a proud former emplyee (Communications Director) I will always wish them the very best.

Employee - Analyst / Associate / Consultant

I would recommend ACS as a good place to work for the teamwork and dedication. However, ACS provides no longevity and a lot of the operations are in silos. Without good leadership, the job can be quite difficult.

Employee - Director

Flexible schedules allowed me to work from home or the office depending on my meetings that day.

Employee - Director

I loved the flexibility and ability to work from home or on the road when I traveled. But the company did feed a culture of competitiveness amongst employees. Staff felt they were sometimes fighting one another to get sponsorship from a company for their specific event. It was tough to convince younger staff that ANY sponsorship was good for the company OVERALL and it wasn't just about their specific event. I suggested soft credit be given to several staff to eliminate this feeling of competing with your colleague.

Employee - Director

Nationally known, 98% brand recognition. Good reputation. But the pay is low - not in line with similar jobs at other companies. I maxed out on my salary early in my career and never was able to get increases because of that. It's very un-motivating to work harder and harder and not have your pay be increased even though my performance evaluations were outstanding. My salary stayed the same regardless of whether I brought in 1 million in new donor support or $1.

Employee - Director

Great cause

Employee - Director

Name recognition, solid mission

Employee - Director

The cause is extraordinary, the learning experience superb and working for the leading volunteer health organization in the US is a tall order.
