At Spain Barclays had developed a strong business model very well adapted to the Spanish market. We all know where we want to go and had the support of the local management. Quite different was the Group management.

Culture is unsettled; finding its path. But despite that there are good people there; huge egos are discouraged, there is a sense of quality and looking out for the customer. Overly regulated by multiple regulators, and minimal ability to push back against irrational regulations.

It doesn't get credit on the street for how good it really is. Internally, getting anything done is a frustrating exercise in futility and bureaucracy. It moves like a sluggish behemoth that it is.

The bank has slowed down on its customer service.

Barclays employees from the U.K. were condescending and uncooperative to employees in the U.S. They promoted their own, over better qualified U.S. employees, cut benefits for people in the U.S. and set up an "us vs. them" mentality among employees. The culture toward employees in the U.S. (many of whom had been with the firm long before Barclays bought Lehman) was "you are too stupid/incompetent to have any authority or be trusted to make any decisions".

If you want career growth, challenging opportunities, autonomy or advancement and you live in the U.S., do not work for Barclays.

Biggest problem was the "long distance" people from the U.K. trying to run a U.S. broker-dealer. They justified many decisions based on the requirements of the regulatory bodies in Europe, rather than the U.S.

Barclays is not very good at taking care of its employees at all levels. If you are not making the millions you are not important. The company would not run without the lower level staff and that should be recognized.

nobody cares about doing the right thing for the company or clients. The efficiency is very low - I would guess 10-15% of what could be achieved.

The place has very low morale. There is no culture of achievement. Mostly "another day, another dollar". Very poor attitude on all levels.

Culture depends on the team, but it is a highly competitive meritocracy, with smaller teams being friendly and collegial.
