ILLUME Advising has a commitment to its employees' quality of life that I have never seen in another company. At the same time, every single person here is passionate about what we do, specifically about being at the forefront of energy efficiency.

I have highly recommended ILLUME to many of my friends because ILLUME offers incredible flexibility, they trust their employees to work independently and with integrity. I enjoy working in an environment where I am constantly learning, being challenged, and have opportunities to grow. Additionally, I appreciate the diverse background of everyone who works here and ILLUME's commitment high quality research.

It's a caring and supportive culture that uses positive reinforcement and understanding rather than anger or defensiveness. People are trusted to do their jobs, and are treated with respect.

Illume stands out as a boutique consulting firm that is women owned. Illume is one of the only energy consultants that focuses heavily on qualitative research, and marrying it with quantitative research.

I made note of when ILLUME open its doors more than five years ago and have been working my way here since. knowing one of the owners, Sara, well at the time from a previous work experience, and learning about what Sara and Anne wanted to accomplish with this new type of consultancy I knew it was something different that I wanted to be part of. But as they were so thoughtful about their business plan and who they hired, I also waited for the right time to approach and inquire. I've been blown away since starting last summer by how intentional every decision is and how different it is to work here. What I mean is that I get to work with some of the most dedicated, honest, hard-working, people (the owners and staff at all levels) I have ever met. I feel lucky, humbled, and every day someone assures me I am worthy and at home here in some way. From the way staff are treated like humans when benefits are designed (not dollar signs, although nothing is done to jeopardize the long-term well-being of the company because that would also jeopardize the well-being of the staff/owners as well) to growth strategy for the business and the employees I am very impressed. We are still a start-up so of course we experience growing pains, and the owners are transparent about that. We work through them together when it makes sense and we get direction when that makes sense. I love coming into work every day. I wish everyone I knew could work here - not really, I don't like everyone I know ;). But seriously, I would recommend this firm to every hard-working person in our industry or who's skills match an open position or would fill a need we have. There is nothing to hold back a recommendation from me unless there isn't a fit - that is important. And it goes both ways.

First - I had to pick no bonus because I was here for less than a year so I haven't been eligible yet. This may seem small but we use video conferencing for all meetings with internal remote staff. We have two main offices and several staff that work out of their homes. I am one of five Directors and all but two of us work out of separate offices (two out of their homes). We have weekly Zoom calls and I didn't get to meet them in person for the first several months. When I did, it was like meeting long lost family - seriously. There was a moment of, oh I thought you were taller/shorter but other than that we already knew each other. We planning a two day long internal training together that way over the course of several months (two of us were new that year; one other person had started just a few months before me). There is no way we could have done that as well as we did just over the phone. How this relates to culture is that being on video isn't really an option - the leadership insists on it and if you're working from home you're still on camera. No makeup? Messy hair? Don't care. The other things that stands out the most is the openness that everyone seems to have. I've been part of small teams that get close, and sometimes too close where friendship sometimes gets in the way of work. Our teams closeness is out of necessity. Although we enjoy each other, we open up because it helps us work better together. If I know someone works better from 10am to 3pm and works a 30 hour week for health reasons right up front, that helps with setting expectations. In other companies that is considered private info not to be shared (not that our HR manager would share it, but our staff isn't afraid to share it) - we embrace these things to be able to work together better. I'm very anxious in large crowds/venues to a conference in Las Vegas scares the crap out of me - probably a good thing to share with co-workers and not be judged. I'm better off at the presentations than on the exhibit floor if I have to go. Things like that.

Our reputation is strong. We are known for being very smart researchers, with strong female leadership. I don't love that last part - our leaders are strong, we don't need a qualifier. We are also known for exacting, professional, creative, and superior work product.

It's difficult to find a firm that's truly authentic. Authentic about staff, the work we do, clients, and ourselves. ILLUME is that organization. And incredibly committed to all of the above.

ILLUME is working toward and continuously developing a culture of honesty, acceptance, and support. A strength-based culture, ILLUME identifies and does their best to place individuals where they will best succeed, operating within their areas of strengths. In the years I've been with the organization we've grown considerably (over 3X the staff). Further, we are a disperse organization with staff across multiple cities. Both these factors have important implications on where we currently are on culture and where we want to go. I note above that we are WORKING toward our culture. How we operate now is different than it needed to be 4 years ago, and for the past 6 months or so we've been having regular and earnest discussions about our organization's culture, where we want it to be, where we already are, and how to get there. Having worked with consultancies prior to joining ILLUME I can attest that this intentionality toward culture cannot be taken for granted.

High quality, forward-looking, and customer-centric. Definitely an organization that breaks out of the box, differentiated from other consulting firms in our space. ILLUME's used the term "disruptive" in the past. I still agree with this, as the organization continues to drive forward to brand and strategy to push the envelopes in our industry.
