People at Marakon are incredibly intellectually honest with their clients and each other. They are grounded by facts and analysis. Of course, a lot of firms are like that as well, but what makes a Marakonite different is that they can challenge with empathy. They bring the facts and insights to a discussion in a way that is constructive and collaborative. They make it easy for people to say "yes" because the insights are sound and because those insights were delivered in the right way.

The nature of the firm is not to be promotional. They win the hearts and my minds of their clients in a gradual, "actions not words" way. Bottom line is that firm's brand is undersized relative to its impact and reputation among its clients.

Marakon is a unique place. It's a boutique consultancy solely focused on strategy, snugly positioned within a public economic consulting firm. This set-up allows Marakon to keep its strong intimate culture while also providing the financial support, infrastructure, and resources of a larger firm. Marakon is also unique in its approach to strategy. As the founders of Value-Based Management, value underpins everything we do. Understanding value drivers requires very rigorous analyses, and projects can often seem slightly academic (in a very interesting way... to us at least)

The leadership team is rare in that it is clear they enjoy project delivery as much as they enjoy business development. At my previous firm, partners were rarely seen contributing to analyses or project architecture beyond a few comments here and there. At Marakon, they are truly grinding it out next to you -- which is a great opportunity to learn from the best.

Marakon is committed to making work-life balance sustainable. The travel model is targeted for 3 days a week. Where you choose to work is up to you, but almost all people choose to come into the office on Mondays/Fridays because the office vibes are great. A great perk is the ability to take a sabbatical for 1 to 2 months throughout your career (unpaid of course, but still an awesome policy).

3 main things stand out to me: Boutique -- truly a boutique feel, where everyone is actually close and the culture is intimate Academic -- based in rigorous value analytics Traditional -- a small firm with a rich history (both good and bad) that has maintained many traditions throughout the years, yet evolving at the same time (new industry focuses, etc.)
