Employee - Associate/Consultant

Integrity, client impact and confidentiality always comes first // very supportive culture, with significant focus on professional development // fun, young colleagues

Employee - Associate/Consultant

I was headhunted more as a Junior Associate at McKinsey than I am now as an Ivy League MBA student. The brand value is enormous. And rightfully so, McKinsey has extreme focus on professional development. You're always put just out of your comfort zone, with sufficient support to push your growth. When I would look back at myself 2-3 months, I would always be impressed by the progress I had made.

Name recognition of firm is very high which opens doors after leaving. The culture is not supportive of minorities or women.

Sociopaths

It is a legal pyramid scheme. The firm structure is up or out and depends on a large base of associates to do the work. Very few associates will be promoted to AP and partner levels, but it is essential they make all the associates feel like they have a shot. The firm encourages former employees to go to large industry companies (actively helps them secure such positions), rise to positions of leadership, and then engage McKinsey for largely overpriced consulting work.

Many services are "available" but accessing them (such as flex time or 3/4 employment) is basically a kiss of death for your chances of being selected to advance.

Employee - Associate/Consultant

The culture as Marvin Bower intended when the firm started is very much a thing of the past. Former top leadership has been involved in insider trading. Top leadership with integrity is the exception not the rule. The culture is very transactional-the only time to call/email someone is when you need something. I did not observe many genuine friendships. I observed the recruiting efforts at a historically black college, and it was very poorly done in comparison to their efforts at Harvard where they place an associate to coach and work with the MBA students to prepare them for the interview process.

McKinsey is recognized as a top strategy firm.

Employee - Senior Associate/Consultant

You'll gain valuable, lifelong experiences that may not seem worth the effort nor compensation at times, but is a worthy investment in one's personal development and network.

Employee - Senior Associate/Consultant

Lots of very smart people, albeit "smart" nearly identically and across just 1-2 dimensions of intellect. Stale culture with homogenous personalities at all levels across the board - it's fit in or get out - but it's because client work is the firm's real focus and culture.

Employee - Senior Associate/Consultant

Stalwart leader in prestige, losing major ground to boutique & lower-tiered consultancies, PE/VC, and startups.

Former Employee - Associate/Consultant

Great training and brand. Tough place but I don't regret joining.

Former Employee - Associate/Consultant

Performance driven, but also regrettably a lot about appearance. Office politics can come into play and you do need to network with the right people to advance.

In ASEAN it's known as the most expensive among its peers. This means that clients either think it's the top of it's game, or over priced. Depends largely on past performance so there are a number of legacy clients.

Global leader in consultancy business.

Employee - Manager

Definitely a great learning environment, with great resources.

Employee - Manager

The culture over the years has been consistent in trying to do the right thing for its employees. It honored my job offer at a time in 2001 when other firms were rejecting offers they had made. Very driven place to work.

While not a deciding factor, and perhaps less with the passing of time, it definitely allows me to get reviewed by recruiters/companies as opposed to other companies
