I would recommend this for those who want to break into the energy / power space as it is a good training ground. I would not necessarily recommend for a longer career.

The employees generally really care about the environment and the community, which is nice to see. However, there are a lot of zombie employees that have been around for ages who seem minimally motivated. Promotion beyond a certain level is highly political and not necessarily based on performance or ability. Leadership is hit or miss. On one hand, I worked for some excellent people from whom I learned a lot; on the other hand, I had an absolute nightmare of a boss who was only in her position due to being politically savvy and was terrible at her job.

On the utility side, PG&E is full of people who have been there for decades and have had multiple failures in multiple positions but are still collecting very healthy pay checks. It was extremely frustrating to see such inefficient people in every facet of the company making it like watching paint dry to get anything done.

It was a classic old boys network. As a minority woman in a supervisor position, I was hired as a contract employee as was everyone else in the newly created marketing department. Halfway through my contract, i was "promoted" to a new integration management position. Once I created a three year plan for them to execute, I was told my contract would not be renewed. I was laid off in the midst of the 2009 recession and I truly believe it was because the old folks did not appreciate a younger woman coming in and creating change. I was also told to let people with less than exemplary skills slide. I objected but in the end they wanted to have underlings who were less than to keep theirs positions safe. It was cruel and unusual for them to lay me off for actually doing a great job and leaving me in the worst job environment while they had plenty of money to keep me on. Used and abused is how i would describe the culture at PG&E and Survival of The Unfitted.

I was constantly refused resources necessary to perform my duties.

A lot of politics and if you have to work with another group, you can be sure that they wont' cooperate. I asked for storage space in the Teradata and Teradata group refused.
